INTRODUCTION

Department of Energy Office at 79 Ratu Mara Road, Samabula.

The Ministry of Transport, Works & Energy is a newly reorganized Interim Government agency which was formed in January 2007.

 With the new formation, Hon Manu Korovulavula is the new Minister and Mr Anand Kumar as Deputy Secretary.  The Director of Energy is Ms Makereta Sauturaga who leads 41 staff.

The Department of Energy (DOE) focuses on four strategic areas for the  development of a sustainable energy sector in Fiji namely;

1.      Energy Planning;
2.      Renewable energy;
3.      Energy security;  and
4.      Power sector

Within these Strategic areas, the following are encompassed;

§       Energy Information and Database;
§       Energy Conservation Efficiency;
§       Petroleum and Transport;
§       Renewable Energy Development;
§       Environmental and Gender Mainstreaming; and
§       Rural Electrification

The Rural Electrification Unit (REU) within DOE specifically looks at the electrification of the rural communities, schools and services centers such as hospitals, community centers, shops, churches, etc. as stipulated by the 1993 Rural Electrification Policy.
