  RENEWABLE   ENERGY   DEVELOPMENT  PROGRAMME (REDP)

The main aim of the Renewable Energy Development Programme (REDP) of the Department of Energy (DOE) is to investigate Fiji's renewable energy resources both in terms of quantity and quality.  These indigenous renewable energy resources are wind, solar, hydropower, biomass, biogas energy resources that have been commercially viable whilst geothermal, wave and ocean thermal energy resources are still in research stages.

Solar and hydropower based technologies are two of the electrification options being made available to rural communities for under the 1993 Rural Electrification Policy.  Biogas plants are constructed utilizing animal waste for cooking and heating purposes.  The DOE has also commenced on the implementation of hybrid systems, which include one or more of the energy resources and/or diesel generating plants for electrification in rural communities.
