INTRODUCTION TO DISASTER MANAGEMENT (IDM) COURSE

Course Purpose

To provide the information and skills necessary for participants to understand and fulfill their assigned roles in disaster management.

Instructional Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Use correct emergency/disaster management terminology.
  • Explain the concept of disaster management.
  • Describe the types of hazards to which individuals are or may be exposed.
  • Explain hazard, vulnerability and risk, and how they link to disaster management.
  • Explain the disaster management cycle, its various stages, and measures that can be taken within those stages.
  • Describe the relationship of disasters with development.
  • Describe the components of a disaster management system.
  • Describe the role individuals and their agency or organisation have in national, provincial and community based disaster management programmes and activities.

 

TRAINING FOR INSTRUCTORS (TFI) COURSE

Course Purpose

To provide knowledge and skills necessary to develop instructors who can train effectively in national and regional disaster management programs.

Instructional Objectives

Upon completion of this course, the participants will be able to:

  • Write performance and instructional objectives.
  • Manage a classroom environment.
  • Prepare lesson plans.
  • Use various methods of instructional communication.
  • Prepare and use audio-visual aids.
  • Operate audio-visual equipment.
  • Make presentations as an individual and as a member of a team.
  • Test trainees for training effectiveness.

 

INITIAL DAMAGE ASSESSMENT (IDA) COURSE

Course Purpose

To provide individuals who have been designated to conduct initial damage assessments, with the process and techniques necessary to perform the tasks satisfactorily.

Instructional Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the purpose of damage assessment in disaster\management.
  • Describe the effects of various hazard impacts.
  • Collect and record information and data related to damage and loss resulting from an adverse event.

 

EXERCISE MANAGEMENT (ExMan) COURSE

Course Purpose

To provide emergency and disaster management organizations with tools and a process to evaluate the status and validity of their plans, organizational relationships, capabilities and strategies.

Instructional Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the five components of the exercise management process.
  • Explain the goal of a needs analysis, describe the needs analysis process and conduct a needs analysis.
  • Collect and record information and data related to damage and loss resulting from an adverse event.
  • Prepare a purpose and objective for an exercise.
  • Use the supplied Reference Manual to design and develop an exercise.
  • Discuss the conduct of the designed exercise.
  • Describe exercise debriefings and follow-up actions after an exercise.

 

EMERGENCY OPERATIONS CENTRES (EOC) COURSE

Course Purpose

To provide the necessary knowledge and skills to those persons who have the responsibility for the establishment, operation, management and administration of Emergency Operations Centres (EOCs).

Instructional Objectives

Upon completion of this course, the participants will be able to:

  • Explain the concepts of emergency operations centres.
  • Determine the requirements for facilities and resources in the establishment of an EOC.
  • Describe the principles for staffing and assigning roles in an EOC.
  • Determine administrative needs of an EOC.
  • Gather and disseminate information relative to an event.
  • Implement decisions made in the EOC.
  • Conduct and/or participate in meetings necessary in the operation of an EOC.

 

RISK PROGRAMME MANAGEMENT (RPM) COURSE

Course Purpose

To provide the information and skills required to develop and manage programmes related to risk, emergencies and disasters.

Instructional Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Define Risk Management.
  • Demonstrate an effective work group process.
  • Describe four management approaches that may be applied to the management of risk programmes.
  • Use the planning process to develop a programme.
  • Diagram and describe the relationship of tasks and resources required for the implementation of a programme.
  • Describe the elements of the management function "Leading" and give an example of the application of each element.
  • Explain the use of control mechanisms for measuring programme/project outcomes.
  • Describe the areas and components of Risk Management.
  • List those skills and personal characteristics that affect a manager's effectiveness.
